Albert Edward Hoye (Extract)

Triesha Snooks

Albert Edward HoyeAlbert Edward HOYE, my Great Grandfather, was born early in 1880 in the Manchester area. He was the second child of Henry Archer HOYE and Alice Sabina REID, his siblings being Catherine, Archer, Ethel and Frank. The UK 1881 & 1891 Censuses found him with his family living in Chorlton on Medlock. By 1901, he was living in Radnor Street, South Manchester, with his mother & siblings. His father Henry appeared on the Census living elsewhere, possibly for employment purposes, as I have a photograph of Henry & Alice together when Henry turned 80 years old in 1931.

Albert married Grace Annie BOWKER in 1903. While still living in England they had 2 sons, Harry & Alec. Harry died at the age of 7 weeks – he died “a silent death” according to my Grandfather.

I assumed that meant he died at birth – however at Southern Cemetery it is recorded that his age at death was 7 weeks (Cot death?).

1912 found Albert migrating to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, with Grace & Alec joining him June 1913. Albert was a Coppersmith by trade, and took with him to Australia a letter of recommendation from the Secretary of the “Manchester Society of Coppersmiths”, and also references from past employers. To name a couple, were Vulcan Motor Engineering Co. (1906) Ltd. (Repair Works,Hawesside Street, Southport), and B. Gas Engine Dept. of The British Westinghouse Electric & Manuf. Co. Ltd. (of Trafford Park, Manchester) ...........
